You know when you meet two people that go together like two pieces of a puzzle?  They go together perfectly as if they were made for one another.  That’s Mike & Antoinette.  It’s clear that these two bring out the absolute best in one another.  Their smiles are infectious and their joy radiates to everyone around them.  To find your soul mate and share your lives together has to be one of the greatest gifts in this crazy ride called life and getting the opportunity to document it is one of the greatest jobs ever.

Mike & Antoinette’s wedding was perfect in every way.  Every detail was meticulously thought out, the entire day was a reflection of their style and exquisite taste.  Since it can be difficult to adequately describe the best day in someone’s life, I’ve called on the two people that can do it best, Mike & Antoinette.  They’ve been kind enough to take the time to reflect on their wedding day, sharing with us everything they loved and everything they learned from their Breckenridge wedding.  Enjoy!

How would you describe your wedding day?

Antoinette: Fun, beautiful, emotional, loving, energetic; the happiest day of my life. Perhaps cliché to say, but how could it not be-surrounded by the people that make us the happiest, in our happy place (the mountains), seeing our 22 months of planning come to life and finally saying “I do”! The whole day was a perfect reflection of us as a couple and we were lucky enough to have gorgeous weather to go with it.

Mike: Early nervous energy that was quickly squashed the moment my groomsmen showed up to get ready. The rest of the day was filled with a lot of laughter and happiness. A day that showed how blessed we are with family and friends that love and support us.

What was your favorite part of the day?

Antoinette: Walking into the church, locking eyes with Mike, and then slowly becoming aware of our friends and family. The wave of emotion and feeling of love in that moment was incredible. I also loved every moment on the dance floor, especially when my sisters, parents and I took over the floor for a song!

Mike: Seeing Antoinette walk down the aisle. I have never in my life felt a rush of emotion like I did at that moment. She looked so beautiful and happy. All I could think about was how lucky I was to be in that position marrying my best friend and the girl of my dreams.

Second favorite was seeing Michael, a groomsman and my brother-in-law, trying to walk/climb the mountain on crutches during pictures. I owe him big time.

What was the best part about marrying in the mountains?

Antoinette: Summit County and Breckenridge have always been a second home for my family and it was important for Mike and I to share that with our family and friends. The views and environment cannot be beat, and provided a unique experience for most of our guests. Plus, we loved the excuse of making more frequent trips to Breckenridge for wedding planning!

Mike: The surroundings. Breckenridge is great town with amazing people. Everyone we worked with went out of their way to make things easy and special. Also, the views we had during our cocktail hour were phenomenal. Playing lawn games and enjoying a cocktail at TenMile Station surrounded by the mountains on all sides is a breathtaking experience.

What do you know now that you wish you had known before your wedding?

Antoinette: I wish I would have known what eloquent public speakers our sisters are!

I don’t think we had any big surprises. I can only think of little things:

  • It’s hard to find late night food in Breckenridge
  • Both the venue and the (day-of) wedding coordinator should know what goes where and when
  • People aren’t lying when they say you don’t really eat at your own wedding

Mike: My good friends (looking at you “cowboy trio”) are capable of acting like grownups. I think the biggest question mark going into the wedding, besides the weather, was how the altitude would impact everyone, especially out-of-towners, when adult beverages came into play. In the end there was not a single issue so great job guys!

If you could do it all over again, would you do anything differently?

Antoinette: The only thing I would do differently in terms of wedding planning is delay cocktail hour by 30 more minutes. We had an hour and a half in between the ceremony and the reception to drive from the church to TenMile Station and take photos, which was a perfect allotment, but I didn’t account for time to bustle my dress, change shoes, etc. I wish I could have spent more time on the patio, socializing during cocktail hour.

Mike: In terms of the actual wedding I wouldn’t change a thing. It was perfect. However, if we are talking about the wedding week in general then I would push more people to come out earlier in the week. Especially anyone not from Colorado. Family and friends who were able to make an extended trip out of it were able to experience what Colorado and the mountains have to offer.

Any advice for couples planning their mountain weddings?

Antoinette: Be prepared for weather not just on your wedding day, but the whole wedding weekend. We were prepared for rain on our wedding day, but were not as prepared for events (rehearsal dinner, bridal lunch, outing to alpine slide) in the days before. We also provided everyone with sunscreen and chapstick, which most guests hadn’t thought to bring.

Hire local vendors who are familiar with the venue, environment and ever changing weather. Being in the mountains adds another layer of variability and its best to have vendors that are prepared and experienced at dealing with abnormal conditions and circumstances.

Ask your florist if the altitude or dryness will affect your flowers. Our bouquets drooped much faster than expected.

I’d also encourage couples to have their guests spend more than a quick weekend in the mountains. Not only did we love having friends and family around earlier in the week, but those that had more time for mountain activities, loved the added experience and weren’t fazed by the altitude.

Mike: The biggest piece of advice I have is try to get every single detail (no matter how minor you think it is) taken care of before the wedding week even arrives. Yes I know that’s easier said then done but Antoinette and I made it a requirement because we wanted to “be in the moment” as much as possible. Thanks to a lot of hard work (mostly by Antoinette) and help from our families we succeeded and it really allowed us to enjoy not only the wedding day but the days leading up to it. I was even able to sneak off for a round at the Breckenridge Golf Club which was a nice bonus.
